It has been announced that David Bowie has recorded original material for new TV series ‘The Last Panthers’. It is the first contribution by the ‘Ziggy Stardust’ singer of original music for film or TV in 20 years, since he recorded ‘I’m Afraid Of Americans’ for 1995 film Showgirls.
Bowie will provide the title-track for ‘The Last Panthers’, a six-part crime thriller co-produced by Sky and France’s Canal+. The track will be featured at the beginning of each episode during the opening credits.
Director Johan Renck said of Bowie’s contribution, ‘I was looking for one of the icons of my youth to write the music for the title sequence, but was presented with a God. [Bowie’s] first response was precise, engaged and curious.’
‘The piece of music he laid before us embodied every aspect of our characters and the series itself – dark, brooding, beautiful and sentimental (in the best possible incarnation of this word). All along, the man inspired and intrigued me and as the process passed, I was overwhelmed with his generosity. I still can’t fathom what actually happened…’
Bowie recently made a comeback after a 10 year hiatus from releasing music with the 2013 album The Next Day. He is also currently working on bringing Nickelodeon’s much-loved character ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ to the broadway stage. After having voiced a character in the show in 2007, Bowie is joining an array of influential musicians including Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, Cyndi Lauper, TI, They Might Be Giants and Aerosmith members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry to bring the musical to life.
The musical will have an initial run in Chicago from June 7 to July 13, 2016, before heading to Broadway for 2016-17.
